Mark Brown's Goals As Marion County Sheriff

Fiscal Responsibility: County Sheriff

We must do more with less and fulfill our obligations as good stewards of the taxpayers money. We will be fiscally responsible by effectively using the tax dollars of the citizens of Marion County for the best services at the lowest cost. We will be vigilant and innovative in finding ways to reduce cost. This includes the following:

  • I will review every contract of the Marion County Sheriff's Department

  • I will review staffing and overtime practices to ensure we have adequate manpower.

  • I will look for inefficiencies throughout the department

  • I will use fuel efficient vehicles

  • I will remove duplications of services

  • I will establish an efficient and cost-effective budget

Public Safety Unification:

  • I will establish communication and maintain a good working relationship with all Law Enforcement agencies, elected officials, civic groups, clergy and neighborhood associations. This includes representation at community meetings.

Bold New Ideas:

  • The Marion County Sheriff's Warrant Unit has done a very good job. However, with the daily influx of warrants, there are currently thousands of open warrants in Marion County. The current caseload for the number of detectives, in the unit is too high. I will increase the staff.

  • There is an increase of violence by sex offenders, we must protect our children and citizens by making sure there are no deficiencies in manpower, monitoring, and compliance with registration. We will aggressively pursue those who do not comply with the law. We will continue to look for new ways to notify citizens of offenders locations.

  • A concern I have is the large number of convicted felons that cannot find jobs. As Sheriff, I will develop strategies to educate and train our inmates. I will work with the community and 501c3 organizations to provide men and women, who have served their time the opportunity to return to the community and be productive citizens. This in turn will help the recidivism rate go down.
